SUDC 2010
A week after vanquishing the opposition at Sheffield OUDT travelled to Peterborough to compete in the Southern University Dance Championship (SUDC), which was hosted by Cambridge this year . It was a strange day, with some fantastic results in the opens but some slightly disappointing ones in the Team Match.
In the Beginners events our pre-team did us proud! In the Ballroom Peter Goodliffe and Georgina Johnson returned with a bang, finishing 5th in the Quickstep and 6th in the Waltz. They were joined by Claire Barnett and Francesca Aquilina and Mike Gale and Lucie Dearlove in the Waltz final who finished 7th and 8th respectively. In the Latin Claire and Francesca also finished 5th in the Cha, and Peter and Georgina were 8th. They were joined by Samara Kolli and Colleen Curran who finished 7th, and Jeremy Jones and Sarah Walker who took the top prize. Both couples also made the Jive final, Samara and Colleen took the silver while Jeremy and Sarah came 5th. Finally Cedric Tan Kai Wei and Cindy Wong Shin Yee also made the Jive final, finishing 4th.
In the Novice two dance Matt Warden and Kitty Meeks took 2nd place in the Ballroom. Unfortunately despite most of our other novice couples making the semi finals, none else made the cut into the final. At the Intermediate level we had more success. Zsolt and May continued to dominate in the Ballroom, taking 1st place in all 3 dances. They were joined in the final by Melvin and Patricia, who came 7th. Both couples also made the Latin final in the afternoon; Melvin and Patricia this time taking the lead, coming 2nd, with Zsolt and May finishing 5th.
The real highlight however was the Advanced results with Oxford taking the first and second place in both disciplines! In the Ballroom Daniel and Sarah ruled the showed, taking 1st place in all four dances! Oli Zeldin and Marja also improved on last week’s results, convincingly finishing 2nd ahead of some tough competition. In the Latin Daniel and Sarah came 2nd behind new SUDC Advanced Latin Champions Ivan Lubenko and Helen Pearce! Bot h finals contained an extremely high level of dancing that was fantastic to watch; of course the results made it just that much sweeter!
After the Opens we had the team match; along with the Offbeat and Rock and Roll events (a special mention should go to Imperial College's fantastic Michael Jackson inspired Offbeat entry!). All 16 couples did us proud, with 7 making their final, and 14 making their semi! Once all the results were in Oxford B and D teams walked away with their respective trophies, while the A and C teams came in second to Imperial College. Congrats to Oli and Marja who took the silver in the Waltz, and Zsolt and May that came behind them in 4th. In the Quickstep Paul and Becky finished 3rd and Alex and Annemarie were just behind them in 4th, and Daniel and Sarah came in 2nd in the Cha. In the Jive Ivan and Helen finished 4th while Melvin and Patricia pulled out the performance of a lifetime to take first place! Oxford also won overall with total team positions (A, B, C, D) of 2nd, 1st, 2nd and 1st, compared to IC's 1st,2nd,1st,3rd, and Cambridge's 3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 2nd.
