Oxford University Dancesport Club

Information For Newcomers

The Club runs a wide variety of classes at a number of different levels in many different styles of dance (ballroom, latin, salsa, rueda, argentine tango and zumba). Information about these various different styles of dance can be found here. A complete list of all classes we run each week can be found here on the Club website.

Classes marked "beginner" are aimed at complete beginners and no prior dancing experience is required. The "Beginners (Bronze)" classes on Wednesday (Latin) and Thursday (Ballroom) move at a slightly faster pace.

The medals classes (Bronze, Silver, Gold & Gold Bar) on Wednesdays for Latin and Thursdays for Ballroom move at a slightly faster pace and enable people to develop their dancing to the level required to take the relevant medal (e.g. Bronze) from the International Dance Teachers Association. Medals tests are offered twice a year for those who want to take them.

For the experienced dancer we run advanced classes in ballroom, latin, salsa and rueda. You might also like to consider our competitive latin and ballroom technique classes on Wednesdays and Thursdays respectively. Please talk to Head Coach, Bruce, if you would like to attend these.

In addition to the various classes the Club also runs a weekly social dance (more details about which can be found at the bottom of the e-mail) and two competitive teams: the Main Team (for experienced dancers) and a Beginners Team (for those who have not had prior dancing experience). Both teams have their own training sessions and both participate in six competitions around the country during the year, including the national student championships (IVDC) at the magnificent Winter Gardens in Blackpool in March and our traditional Varsity match against Cambridge in May. Trials for both these teams are being held next weekend - please see the relevant sections below for more details.
